eisbach surfers
the eisbach (ice river) in munich has a long history of being used for surfing. locals told me that the tradition started when a rail was installed at the bottom of the river in order to oxygenate the water for fish. the wave caused by this attracted so many surfers that the sport was banned for some time. recently though, the ban was lifted, which caused an active surfing scene to spring back up in landlocked munich. even in december when i took these pictures, surfers were lining up to jump in the ice-cold water.
